Safety

Safeguarding

Safeguarding of volunteers and the people they’re helping is of the utmost importance to us.

Now more than ever, the most vulnerable in our communities need support. We must find a way to help that doesn't put them at any further risk - by using personal data irresponsibly or being careless about who we put them into contact with.

SpareHand requires its community partners to put in place robust procedures to protect the people we are helping. These are set out in full in our Terms and include:

  • Never sharing any personal details of a vulnerable person through the app.

  • Starting volunteer tasks at public meeting points rather than at anyone’s personal address.

  • Vetting volunteers that come into direct contact with vulnerable people, through our partner organisations.

In-person volunteering during Coronavirus

If you are volunteering to help someone, please take these basic steps to make sure you do not contribute to the spread of coronavirus. The community organisation that is overseeing your voluntary tasks will provide advice specific to the type of work.

Basic steps:

  • If you feel at all unwell, do not volunteer to help others who are self-isolating.

  • Wash your hands regularly with warm water and soap, especially before and after you deliver any items to a person in isolation.

  • If you make a delivery, stay 2 metres away from the person who is in isolation at all times - place the items outside their door and then step away.

  • Use a face-mask, gloves and hand sanitiser as instructed by the partner organisation.
